Week 3 - 16 February 2018

Kia ora e te Whānau o Whetūkairangi

We have made it to the end of the first full week of school in 2018. It's been full of action in every which way - whether it's been inside, outside, alongside the classroom. This notion of 'classrooms without walls' isn't new. As you will witness at home with your children, so much learning happens that is not within the confines of classroom walls. 

One thing that always stands out for me, as I observe and listen to children working together outside of the confines of 168 Seatoun Heights Rd, is literally the space this allows for children to be viewed from a different perspective, for strengths to be identified that otherwise may be lying low or undiscovered. It may also be that it is this opportunity which provides impetus for building greater self efficacy in areas of learning that don't come so easily. 

Additionally, we have never known so much about learning as we do now as we have never known how much about what happens in the brain when learning occurs. Technology has advanced so much! So what's important?

Extensive studies have identified the following elements:
  • Personalised learning: no two individuals learn in the same way, nor do they bring the same prior knowledge to a learning experience. The way we learn is as unique as our fingerprint. 
  • Socially constructed learning (Johnson, 1981): the collaboration, peer-tutoring and reciprocal teaching that occurs when students work together results in a deeper understanding of the material being covered. 
  • Differentiated learning (Bloom, 1974): the prior knowledge we all bring to a task means individuals require different levels of challenge, pace, content and context. 
  • Learning that is initiated by students themselves (Ramey & Ramey, 2004): typically when a student initiates a learning experience or exploration, they learn more. 
  • Learning that is connected to the physical world and authentic contexts: children learn through interaction with others and the physical world (Malone & Tranter, 2003).

The current focus for Inquiry Learning across the school is Kaitiaki o te Ngahere , Guardians of the Forest! This provides stunning opportunities to get outside and connect learning to the physical, real and authentic world and across many different learning areas. It will definitely provide opportunities for unrealised strengths to be tapped.

The Newsletter, Blogs, Seesaw, and upcoming Goal Setting Meetings, plus the Open Morning, will provide plenty of scope for you to support learning outside the four walls too. For those of you at the Wrap 2017, you will have heard me talk about the strength of the triangle - the strongest shape of all. Our triangle being the children, teachers/staff and yourselves. Let's have an extra strong 2018.

Important Information regarding Allergies

As in any environment, we have students with allergies, the most common being nuts, eggs and dairy. Allergic reactions can be so severe that they may be life threatening.
We have students that are severely allergic to ‘traces of nuts’ and dairy and this is a life threatening allergy. For one student, Otto who is based in Tautoru, allergens do not need to be ingested to bring on a severe reaction. These reactions can occur, and have occurred, for Otto when he has come into contact with something or someone that has had, or been around, nuts. It can happen by touching materials that someone else has touched. The nature and character of our school means that students work in different spaces, so class routines are encouraged in all areas across the school. 
We aim to educate and work in partnership with all students and whānau across the school to provide a safe environment.
We continue to minimise the risk of accidental ingestion or contact with food allergens by using these key strategies:
  • Re-iterating to students - NO trading or sharing of food, drink bottles or eating utensils.
  • Ensuring students with allergies eat lunches and snacks that have been prepared at home by their caregivers.
  • Carefully managing and supervising students during eating times.
  • Washing and drying hands before and after eating.
  • Wiping down and cleaning surfaces when students must eat inside - due to bad weather.
We ask for your support to keep our school environment safe by: 
  • Avoiding eggs, muesli/nut bars, whole nuts and peanut butter/nutella spreads, etc, at school.
  • Reinforcing the importance of good hand-washing practices before and after eating.
  • Reinforcing our message that food is not to be shared at school.

Please Read this Letter from Stephanie Hayes' Parents

Dear Worser Bay School families

Our daughter Stephanie was diagnosed with leukaemia (a type of blood cancer) in 2015. She is still receiving treatment and has regular hospital appointments and medication.

Many of you know and understand how important it is that Stephanie attends school just like your child(ren) – but for new families to the school, and, as a reminder, please read and follow the information below.
While Stephanie is still on treatment she has low immunity. Lowered immunity means she is more susceptible to illness than other children. In particular, chicken pox, measles and the flu can have serious consequences for her.
Please notify the school immediately if there is chicken pox, measles or flu within your family. It's very important that you do not send your child(ren) to school if they are unwell.

Pizza Lunch - Wednesday 21 February

On Wednesday 21 February, small individual pizzas, made in our own pizza ovens, will be available for lunch. 

All pizzas have a tomato sauce base and you can choose from three types of topping:
  • Cheese
  • Cheese and Ham
  • Cheese and Salami

Pizzas cost $5 each. Please order via Online Payments on our website. Please note that orders need to be in by midnight on Monday 19 February


Volunteers Needed

We need you! We have an exciting line-up of fundraising events this year. We had a fantastic 2017 (thanks to our wonderful parent/whanau community) and want to keep the good times rolling. We’ll be publishing the 2018 fundraising calendar shortly - a mix of tried and true favourites plus maybe one or two new events.

Can you help? The Sausage Sizzles and Pizza Lunches are very popular, but we need a refresh of volunteers. Are you available on some Tuesdays or Wednesdays to help with either of these? Please let us know so we can hit the ground running!

Goal Setting Meetings

These are the first formal connection point for the year. These will happen in Weeks 4 and 5 – 20 February to 2 March. Please book a time with your child's base group teacher (see how to below). Your child, with support from yourselves and the teacher, have a chat along the lines of how they are feeling about their learning, their strengths, what they are proud of, what they enjoy, and what they would like to learn and improve. The idea is for the child to own the goal so that it's not 'done to'. It can take some good prompting when required!

Powhiri - Friday 23 February 2018

You are warmly invited to a Welcome Celebration for new children and their families into the heart of our school. Our welcome Powhiri is an opportunity for us to formally welcome you to our kura. This happens on an yearly basis and this invitation is for children and their families who have started during Terms 3 and 4, 2017 and who will start in Term 1 and 2, 2018. If you haven't had the opportunity before then please feel free to join us.

We recognise that some of you already truly belong, but this is an opportunity to be formally welcomed into the unique and vibrant learning community which is Worser Bay School.

Welcome to the whānau.

Who?  Children and their families who have started/are starting school from Term 3, 2017 through to the end of Term 2, 2018.
Where?  Worser Bay School/Te Kura o Whetūkairangi
When?  Friday 23 February, 9.15am - 10.00am (approx)
What do we do?  Families are 'called on' into the courtyard by staff members and are seated. A bit of chat and waiata follows. 

We hongi and then children already at school return to class. Parents, grandparents, younger siblings, etc, are invited to morning tea and to mix and mingle in the staffroom. It's all a little weather dependent, so same place, same time but we may need to change to inside. You will be guided, so don't worry!

Voluntary Contributions

The Voluntary Contribution for 2018 is $355 per student. If this is paid before the end of Term 1, you may pay a reduced rate of $305 per student. We appreciate that family incomes may be stretched and payments can continue to be made by instalments during the year. If you wish to pay in 2 instalments, these will be $177.50 to be made by the end of Term 1 (Friday 13 April) and by the end of Term 3 (Friday 28 September), to reduce the administrative costs involved. Please discuss with office staff or pay online via Online Payments.   

Tip for Online Payments:  
If paying your Voluntary Contribution in Term 1, change the amount to pay to $305 to get the $50 reduction.

Voluntary Contributions are tax deductible. Go to this IRD Website Page for more information about how to claim a tax credit. Annual receipts are available on your account.

Mahutonga/Matariki - Zoo Trip - Monday 26 February

This year we are joining up with the Zoo to be part of their Bush Builder program. The program works to get children to "discover for themselves the wonder of the world around them, in their own schools and homes, and to empower them to take positive action in their own communities."

The Senior students will be visiting the Zoo on Monday 26 February. They will engage in Workshops around the idea of kaitiakitanga. Then they will have some time to explore the Zoo. 

Children will need comfortable walking shoes, sunhats, weather appropriate clothing, a drink bottle and a lunchbox full of food! 

Payment via Online Payments is also permission, so please ensure payment of $4.20 is made before the day.

Autahi and Tautoru - Zoo Trip - Tuesday 27 February

As part of our Inquiry into Conservation and the Environment this term, Autahi and Tautoru will be participating in a Bush Builders workshop at Wellington Zoo on Tuesday 27 February and we will have a chance to have a look around the zoo as well (weather permitting). 

Children will need comfortable walking shoes, sunhats, weather appropriate clothing, a drink bottle and a lunchbox full of food! 

Payment via Online Payments is also permission, so please ensure payment of $4.20 is made before the day.

We would also appreciate some parents to help supervise the children during the trip from 9:30am to 2.30pm. If you are able to come, please contact your Base Group teacher as soon as possible (pop in or email to let us know): 

Eastern Zones Cricket - Wednesday 28 February

All students in Years 5 and 6 will be representing Worser Bay School at Eastern Zones Cricket. The event will be held on Wednesday 28 February at Kilbirnie Park from 9.30am to 2.30pm. We will be leaving school at 9am.

On the day, your child will need to wear their Worser Bay School sports t-shirt, dark shorts and appropriate footwear. They will need to bring a packed lunch, drink bottle, sunhat, sunscreen and a warm jumper. 

Children will be travelling to the park by bus. Please pay $5 and give permission via Online Payments

We will need a parent to umpire/score and supervise each team for the duration of the event. Please email John if you can help. 

A Note from the Office

Sun Protection
In Term 1, students will still need adequate sun protection when playing outside. 

We would encourage you to send your children to school with sunscreen already applied - particularly to backs of necks, tops of ears (if wearing caps rather than wide brimmed hats), forearms and legs. We do stress that our Sun Protection policy states wide brimmed hats. For more information, please refer to our Sun Protection Policy on SchoolDocs.

School Driveway
Please do not use the bottom of the school driveway as a drop off zone. The yellow lines are there for a reason. We have had a couple of reports of near misses on the crossing due to cars pulling in and stopping there. Please help keep our children safe.

Kia ora tatou! Hi, students, families and friends

We are James and Therese, and you might have seen us around Worser Bay School lately. You’re probably wondering what we’re doing here. We are both part of the Masters of Teaching and Learning programme at Victoria University and we have the privilege of being put on student teacher placement at this beautiful school for most of this year! James’ mentor is John and Therese’s mentor is Nicola, so we will be mostly be in the Mahutonga/Matariki space. We can’t wait to get to know the students and families better, and, of course, learn the ways of the awesome teachers here at Worser Bay.

Previous jobs and study: I have worked as a youth worker and tutor for about five years. More recently I worked as a health promoter alongside a group of awesome counsellors. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Sociology.

Family: I have been married for two years and my husband is a teacher as well! I grew up with my mum, dad and younger sister, Alex, in Island Bay. My whanau has a friendly cat named Aggie. When I married Johnny I gained EIGHT new brothers and sisters-in-law – he has a massive family. I also have lots of cousins, aunties and uncles.

Favourite colour: Surfie green – a mix between blue and green
Favourite movie: Wonder! I love it
Favourite animal: My family cats and red pandas at the Zoo

Previous Jobs and study: I worked at Plimmerton School as a Teacher-Aide for a couple of years before studying to become a teacher, currently working at Shoe Clinic as well during the weekends, so come on down and buy some shoes from me!

Family: I have a sister named Jasmine who lives in Melbourne and is a Ballet Dancer! My mum lives in Plimmerton by the beach and loves swimming, and my Dad lives in Miramar with my step brothers and sisters Kingston, Eva & Miley who all go to Miramar Central School, just down the road from us!

Heads Up - 'Welcome to Our Learning Space' - Wednesday 7 March

We will be having two 'Welcome to Our Learning Space' sessions on the morning of Wednesday 7 March. This is when you see the 'learning in action', get to join in the fun and have a chance to ask any questions. Come along to one of our sessions.

Session times are:

9.15am to 9.45am and 10.00am to 10.30am

Your child will show you around their classroom space and demonstrate some of their learning and daily routines.  Some of you were able to get to know your child’s learning space and teaching team through our Transition Morning in Term 4 2017. For some of you, this may still be a new space to explore, so please feel free to pop in and say 'hi' if you haven’t had a chance to catch up yet. 

This will also be an opportunity to celebrate the first 6 weeks of learning for the year together.

In the meantime, if you have any specific worries about your child's learning, please contact the base group teacher and make a separate appointment to chat privately. 

We hope to see you there. 


We recognise the importance of positive accomplishment and emotion in our wellbeing and in our success overall so one thing we have been doing in Autahi is identifying our personal strengths and our whole class strengths. Library Day 
Fridays are our library day in Autahi. We get to go to the library, browse interesting books, talk to Christine our librarian and check out new books! Have a look at our Blog to find out more about it!

Global Play Day 
We had such a blast on Play Day last week. We got to mix up with our Senior buddies and friends from Tautoru. We got to play inside and outside and we had so much fun! Have a look at our Blog to see more!


Positive Health
We know how important physical activity is for our wellbeing, so each morning we have been starting our day with Wake Up Your Brain. This term, our options are dance, dodgeball, rob the nest and boot camp. Check out the Blog to find out more.

Growth Mindset and Maths!
We have all (teachers included!) been learning about how we can use a growth mindset to face new challenges and develop a positive attitude toward Maths. We are growing our minds in Maths by using Number Talks to share our ideas about how a number is made up of other numbers. Head over to the Blog to see what we have been up to.

Global Play Day
What a day! We really enjoyed our day of play on Global Play Day. Throughout the day we were mindful of how we could continue to show manaakitanga towards each other. It was great to connect with our Autahi and Mahutonga/Matariki friends too later on in the day.


Growth Mindset Writing: Collaboration with Auroa School

At Worser Bay School we have a big focus on Growth Mindset. We have talked about trying new things and challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zone and grow our minds!

The concept of a Growth Mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck. She says that “In a Growth Mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment,”

This year we will be challenging ourselves by taking the #growyourmindchallenge

Our students started the year by writing about something that challenged them in the holidays. We shared our writing with our friends at Auroa School and they have written their own Growth Mindset pieces, using our writing as models.

The additional bonus was that because our students had an audience for their writing they were especially keen to do a good job! Read our Growth Mindset writing on our Blog.

Literacy Link and Online Maths
Every week or so we update our Literacy Links and Online Maths documents and send these out to our students. The expectation is that students will use these at school to work on their goals.

If students choose to use these at home then that is great too!

We will be sending these out to parents so that they can see some of the things that we are asking our students to do.

Global Play Day
“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” ~ Plato

We celebrated Global Play Day on Friday 9 February. 388,493 participants took part across the world. Our students enjoyed playing games with each other. It was interesting to see how they used their imaginations to invent new games.

Before we started our students set 2 goals. One was linked to manaakitanga and the other was about creativity.

Questioning and Inquiry
Student Inquiry is at the heart of learner agency. Students need to be able to ask good questions to chase their curiosity and wonderings. This helps students to build on the knowledge that they already have.

This term, the learner attribute that we are focussing on is "I am a thinker." An important part of being a thinker is being able to ask good questions. We would like our students to design and ask red, orange and green light questions.

Our learners thought about the different types of questions when writing our own for the "Forest Protector" Inquiry. Here are some of them:

We have also made an "attribute mountain" so students can see how we are going with their questioning. The avatars will climb up the mountain as our students improve their questioning abilities.

Working with Worser Bay Boating Club
As part of the significant upgrade to the Boating Club we have been asked to get the children to contribute their ideas to the development, so we spent Thursday and Friday immersed in the environment and based at the WBBC. Thanks to Dean Stanley for coming in and talking to us on Wednesday.

Poetry: The Best Words in the Best Order
We have been writing about some of our experiences including Sailing last week. Samuel Taylor Coleridge suggested:

‘Poetry; the best words in the best order’.

We liked that idea and have been playing with words, thinking about their order and which ones might be ‘best’.
