".....As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin."

As I sit to write this piece I am reminded of these famous Bob Dylan lyrics and how relevant they are to our context. I found some student reports from about six years back recently. These were pre-dating National Standards when we weren't at least attempting to write in plain simple language! As I read these latest reports I have reflected on the steady changes, the focus on continuous improvement, the way we have dealt with pressures to keep the emphasis on the 'whole child', what we witness
every day and what extensive research qualifies as vital.

In the last two days I have had our cleaner, Kim, seek me out to describe how a young child saw her struggling with getting the rubbish into the bin, ran up to her and said "Do you need some help? Let's do it together!" She was mightily impressed that a
child of that age would even notice. I have also had parents in our school community, who were not brought up here, describe what they see and feel about our school.  They summed it up using the words 'heart and warmth' - I guess we would use the term 'aroha'.

We can have both. Think about two of our Strategic Goals 1. Excellence in Student Achievement and 2. Exceptional Teaching and Learning. Children cannot take risks in their learning if they don't feel socially and emotionally connected. It is never either/or. So, as I wind the clock back and now take stock of where we are at today..... I am extremely proud and say..... bring it on! Together, as a whole community, we can work with, learn from and take the best of .....these times..... that are a-changin'.
