Week 1 - 5 May 2017

Kia ora e te Whānau o Whetūkairangi

Nau mai Haere mai - welcome to the first of our more wintery terms!

It's somewhat chillier on the outside, but, rest assured, more warm and action packed underneath!

Grow Your Mind Day was the big highlight at the end of last term. What an opportunity for parents, friends, teachers and children to learn from each other. When I think about what we hold most dear, it was all happening....
  • Valuing the whole child - Tick!
  • Knowledge Building and Inquiry - Tick!
  • Collaboration - Tick!
We will certainly have more on the Positive Education/Wellbeing front on the go this term and are looking forward to holding a Parent Workshop later in the year when we can share ideas, look at where we have come from and work on the master plan for the future together.

Celebrating both Matariki and The Arts (focussing on visual art this year) will most definitely be upcoming highlights full of learning and growth. Both of these events will take place later this term - we will provide specific details as they emerge. It used to be so simple in 'the old days' when we didn't have 'student voice'! Simple, yes, but so much more engaging now!

Teachers are hard at work writing Progress Reports so you can look forward to having conversations with the base group teacher this term, coming up from 12 June (Weeks 7 and 8), this time without your child present. Of course, if you are worried about anything, please don't wait........ you may become more worried...... and we don't want that! Please make a time with the teacher that's convenient for both of you to connect sooner rather than later.

The other event coming up very fast is the DISCO! The first DISCO of the year.

Date:  Friday, 19 May 2017
Time:  6.00pm to 7.30pm
Place:  Salvation Army Hall, 63 Miramar Ave, Miramar
Cost:  $5 to be paid via Wrap It Up

The theme is Jungle Safari - full of opportunity! If you have volunteered, or are going to, thank you so much - we can't hold events like this without our parents getting stuck in, and the children certainly love it!

Ngā mihi

Our Principal’s Awards are currently focusing on the following:

Back to Business
We’ve had a fun-filled first week back with lots of learning through play and discovery happening! We’ve been acting, making creations, making maps and so much more! Have a look at the blog to see what we’ve been up to!

We’ve started our term with tonnes of enthusiasm and lots of positivity towards all our learning! Our Inquiry this term is focused around the Maori concept of: Turangawaewae Our place/s to stand. We have been exploring maps and have travelled back in time to compare old photos of significant places around our Peninsula. Some old artefacts have also found their way into Tautoru which we have been sorting and classifying...take a look at our blog to find out more.

Joining Worser Bay School
If you are in zone - we would love to hear from you if you have a child turning 5 in the second half of 2017, or early 2018, who would like to attend Worser Bay School. If you know of any other children living in zone who would like to come to Worser Bay School - we'd also like to hear from them too!
To check our geographical zone - see Joining our School.
Thank you.

School Closures
Please note that school will be closed on Friday 2 June in addition to Monday 5 June for Queens Birthday Weekend.
School will also be closed on Friday 25 August for a mid-term break in Term 3.

Please park responsibly when dropping off your children to school. When cars are parked on both sides of Nevay Road at school drop off / pick up times, buses are unable to get through.
Warning - Please do not use the Worser Bay School driveway as a drop off zone. There was a near miss involving a young child on the footpath at the bottom of the school driveway last year. The yellow lines are there for a reason!

'Jungle Safari' Disco

The next WBS Disco is coming up on Friday 19 May. This will be a fun night for all the children and we encourage them (and the adults) to dress up in our ‘Jungle Safari’ theme.
There will be prizes for the best costumes and the best dancers.

Where: Salvation Army Hall, Miramar Ave
When: 6.00-7.30pm, Friday 19 May 2017
Entry Fee: $5 per child, WBS students only. Younger siblings are welcome to attend at no charge. Please pay online at www.wrapitup.co.nz

We'd appreciate each family bringing along plate of food on the night for us to sell at the supper table. We will also have ice blocks for sale, and, due to popular demand, we're doing another Toy Swap. This is where each child who attends brings an unwanted toy (wrapped) to add to the toy box. At the end of the night, the children who donated a toy get to take one from the box. The goal is for us to recycle and reuse things we've grown tired of.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Pizza Lunches

On Wednesday 10th May, small individual pizzas will be available for lunch. All pizzas have a tomato sauce base and you can choose from three types of topping:
  • Cheese
  • Cheese and Ham
  • Cheese and Salami
Pizzas cost $5 each. Please order via Wrap It Up. Orders are due by 9am on Tuesday 9th May.

The pizzas will be handed out by area (Autahi, Tautoru and Mahutonga/Matariki), therefore it is important that you order under each child's name separately (if you are ordering for two or more children).

Pizza Lunches - Term 2
This term, we will once again be having one Pizza Lunch fundraiser per month. The remaining Term 2 lunches will be on 14th June and 5th July. As with the Sausage Sizzles, you can order in advance for the whole term via Wrap It Up.

Wind Sculpture Walk
We went looking for wind and, man, did we find it!

A crazy wind was blowing……but we’re not scared.

It is all part of getting inspired for our ‘Wind Power’ Inquiry. Looking at the sculptures along Cobham Drive, seeing how they move, figuring out how they work and asking questions about how and why the works were created.

Read some poems on the blog.

Wind … and sailing
As part of our Wind Inquiry we have been looking at what parts optimist boats have and how they work. We also had a look at compass directions - check it out on the blog!!
